Home of the world’s largest refugee camp, housing almost 1 million refugees, predominantly Rohingya, have fled from the neighbouring country Myanmar. The Rohingya have been the target of genocide and ethnic cleansing and have had to flee, leaving everything behind. The Rohingya refugees are now stuck in an open-air prison located in Cox’s Bazar. They are unable to leave the camp and they are not allowed to work. Many people are suffering from depression due to the lack of purpose in their life. They are unable to provide for their families and their children are unable to have a proper education.
Within the camps, gangs are rife, corruption and crime are known and feared by the refugees living within the camp. Many people and families who have been targets of these gangs have had to flee back into Myanmar because they fear for their safety. Life is tough, overpopulated, and dangerous here. Many people have had no choice but to live here and so this camp built on unstable sand cannot be referred to as home.
