Scott was based in Ukraine for 3 months during the beginning of the war in 2022 and was on assignment with Partners Relief and Development. During this time Scott followed the advancement of the Ukrainian frontline and the evacuations of Ukrainian civilians. For the first couple of weeks Scott was based in Kiev, at that time the Russian Military had surrounded the capital city. Scott knew civilians within the rural areas that were under the occupation of Russia were suffering because the Russian soldiers were also struggling to find food. We didn’t realise the extent until we arrived in Irpin, Bucha and Katiuzhanka where a lot of the war crimes and mass graves of civilians were discovered in the following days of the Russian retreat.
After a week of supporting the heavily affected areas of Kiev and Chernihiv Oblast’s we transferred our focus over to the East where the fighting was continuous and the humanitarian support was extremely low. Scott spent the rest of the two months working in many areas along the front lines, evacuating families and bringing in food and medicine to people that chose to stay.
These images span for 3 months during the beginning of the war capturing the survival and spirit of the Ukrainian people.
